abstract="Updated software and new hardware for the Bosch crash data retrieval (CDR) tool has made it possible for users to retrieve data from certain Ford powertrain control modules for the first time. This makes it possible for CDR data analysts to evaluate the pre-impact conditions of many newer Ford vehicles. This paper presents methods to use in order to safety retrieve and interpret the data contained in the Ford PCMs. Although the data retrieval process is fairly straightforward, there is a risk of spoiling evidence if the procedures outlined in the CDR help files are not followed. Interpretation and appropriate time-relative sorting of the retrieved data can be complicated by power interruptions that occur as a result of the collision or communication interruptions between the RCM and the PCM. Understanding how the PCM records data and what happens when a power interruption occurs will help the analyst understand what data was likely overwritten in an unlocked data file. This process can be either very simple or very complicated, depending on what data was overwritten.<p />",
