abstract="Signal processing is the analysis, interpretation and manipulation of a stream of information from a remote source. This article discusses a simple form of signal processing--the vehicle speed sensor. This article describes how the VSS on heavy trucks works, how it communicates with the electronic control module (ECM), and how the ECM converts the initial analog signal to a digital value that can be stored in binary format. In the future, there will be a decline in the use of dedicated VSS since speed measurement capability is already built into most new ECMs. More smart sensors will be used, in which the analog to digital conversion takes place inside the sensor and the binary values are broadcast to the ECM on a communication bus. This will save processing power in the ECM.<p />",
