abstract="The benefits associated with lighting the nation's roadways are manyfold. According to U.S. Department of Transportation and National Highway Administration data, lighting is the most effective improvement available in stopping and/or limiting the severity of accidents. Until rather recently, however, the method of lighting roadways has remained unchanged. This article describes new roadway lighting systems for the next millennium, specifically focusing on the utility and advantages of the individual lowering device (ILD) lamp fixtures. These roadway lighting systems can be used with a single luminaire or as many as 4 can be placed on a single pole; ILDs can also accommodate offset, shoe box, high-mast, or cobra head type luminaires. ILDs are easily maintainable and more cost effective than traditional roadway lamps.<p />",
