abstract="The Institute of Transportation Engineers has recently proposed recommended guidelines for the design and application of speed bumps. This article summarizes this report, which is an update to a 1997 recommended practice. The report provides guidance on the proposed use and potential effectiveness of speed humps; information on community relations and the administrative procedures associated with successful speed hump installations; criteria for the proper design of speed humps and tables; information on monitoring and evaluating speed hump effectiveness; and an understanding of key considerations associated with the application of speed humps, such as liability and enforcement. Comments are being solicited on the proposed practice.<p />",
