abstract="<p>The present review is an extension and update of Parke and Collmer's (1975) critical review of the child abuse literature. Among the topics covered are an updated definition of child maltreatment, characteristics of maltreated children, rate of incidence and approaches to understanding child maltreatment, including the new ecological model proposed by Belsky (1980) and Garbarino (1976, 1977). In addition, several strategies for treatment and intervention are suggested, with special attention given to one model program which provides treatment for entire families. Implications for research are discussed briefly.</p><p />",
