abstract="Two anthropomorphic test dummy (ATD) heads are evaluated for biodynamic fidelity in a combined experimental and analytical study. In the experimental investigation, a part 572 head, a hybrid III head, and a series of cadaver heads were subjected to the same impacts. Blows were delivered by a padded, pneumatically powered impactor to three locations on the head. The areas over the frontal and mandible bones were impacted in the mid-sagittal plane. The side of the head (parietal bone region) was impacted in the lateral direction. Head response measures are compared for impact velocities between 16 and 27.4 km/h. Limitations on the use of ATD head accelerations as human injury predictors are examined. Intracranial pressures are calculated from the head accelerations using a finite element brain model.
