abstract="The purposes of improving shoulders are to increase the effective width of the surfacing, to protect bituminous surfaces from the damaging effect of some farm equipment, to encourage disabled vehicles to park completely off the roadway, and to allow faster vehicles to pass trucks and buses. Three cases are presented: gravel-clay construction, crushed rock construction, stabilized gravel and bituminous plant mixes.<p />",
