abstract="Two sets of data collected by the US consumer products safety commission (CPSC) were analyzed to estimate national trends in bicycle accidents for the period 1973-1976.  The first data source was the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System which comprises on national sample of hospital emergency rooms that report visits due to product-associated accidents.  The second was a group of in-depth investigations of bicycle accidents done by the CPSC.  It was found that type of injury and the population injured had not varied substantially over the time period involved.  Similarly, the number of bicycle accidents did not increase significantly.  When product failure cases were considered, it appeared that a voluntary manufacturers' standard (BMA/6) has reduced the incidence of frame failure.<p />",
