abstract="Occupational violent crime (OVC), specifically that represented by homicide data, has been studied by NIOSH and others for over 10 years. OVC-homicide data are currently collected through a national surveillance system; OVC-injury and rape data can only be gathered at the state level. Only one state level study of all categories of OVC predates and is used as a model for this Virginia study. Phase 1 of Virginia's study corroborates previous knowledge concerning the types of worksites at &quot;high risk&quot; of OVC; it also suggests several new industries that should be analyzed. An increasing number of calls for OSHA's regulation of OVC make it imperative that safety and risk-control professionals understand this category of risk and the state-of-the-practice for its control.<p />",
