abstract="Researchers examined the relationship between prior alcohol use in 121 freshmen and their fraternity pledging decisions. Males matriculating at college with a history of high alcohol consumption pledged fraternities in significantly greater proportions than those in the medium-and low-consumption categories. The results counter the widely held view that fraternities are the principal cause of heavy drinking, and support the alternative perspective that they attract heavy drinkers. Implications for future research and intervention efforts are discussed.<p />",
