abstract="This paper considers the role of architectural features in the causation of &quot;everyday&quot; accidents in the built environment. Firstly the problem of &quot;judgement of facts&quot; is examined by giving an example of the development of accident scenarios for stair accidents and the way in which these might help to find measures to reduce the frequency and severity of this type of accident. Secondly the problem of &quot;judgement of values&quot; is discussed by considering what knowledge is available to designers -- and in what form -- and what kind of decision aid designers (and others working in the field of designing, construction and managing buildings) need to implement this knowledge.<p />",
