abstract="The German standard DIN 31 001, concerning reach over barriers, was tested for its applicability to the working population in Britain. The safety distances given in DIN 31 001 are designed to protect 95% of the workforce. It was found that these distances would not protect an equivalent percentage of the British male workforce at most barrier heights. It was also found that at certain barrier and hazard heights subjects could increase their &quot;forced reach distance&quot; by up to 20% by making a small upward jump. In addition, subjects overbalanced when reaching down over a 1000 mm high barrier rail.<p />",
