abstract="This study assessed the differences between frequencies of hospital primary diagnoses by categories and by types between underground coal miners and non-coal miners. The data gathered provided a detailed list of the hospital primary diagnoses found on the 1766 charts within the 1158 medical records studied. Based upon statistical analyses coal miners were over-represented in hospital primary diagnoses (diseases and injuries) by categories and by types. There was also a meaningful relationship between frequencies of hospital primary diagnoses (diseases and injuries) by categories, and specified contractual employer (for the miner) and month of the year admitted to the hospital (for both groups). Neither age (for each group) nor the contractual mining strikes (for miners only), and frequencies of hospital primary diagnoses (diseases and injuries) by categories were related.<p />",
