abstract="In this paper the problem of specifying the design of a water-spray ventilator to perform a given duty is considered. Such ventilators, which are widely used for local ventilation in coal mines, take the form of a spray nozzle mounted on the axis of a tube. The spray from the nozzle entrains the surrounding air and directs it through the tube. The results of an investigation of air entrainment by sprays are used to formulate a design procedure. Some applications of the procedure to typical design situations are included.<p />",
