abstract="The Commission of the European Union (EU) launched an ambitious program in its ITS field to improve road safety, transport efficiency, and environmental quality. The aim of the SAVE project in the EU fourth-framework advanced transport telematics program is to develop an integrated system (the in-vehicle SAVE unit) that will monitor driver stayed in real-time and, if judged necessary, undertake emergency handling, prior to and during the emergency situation. This will be realized by instant detection of driver impairment and hence forward a shift of the car status to automatic driving mode in case of emergency, to effectively and safely control the vehicle. The integrated monitoring unit module of the SAVE system aims to detect deterioration in driver performance as a result of alcohol abuse, fatigue, breakdown or inattention. The driver impairment monitoring system should be able to do this on the basis of changes in a limited number of vehicle and driver parameters. Keywords: Driver distraction;<p />",
