abstract="OECD member countries continue to be faced by an enormous traffic safety challenge: 120,000 fatalities per year and huge economic losses. The future looks grim in view of persistent traffic growth. The health of OECD economies depends on the active pursuit of innovative and effective traffic safety programs. The OECD Road transport research program contributes to new avenues with a focus on internationally compatible exposure and accident data files and this aggregate accident data investigations. The role of insurance in accident prevention is studied as all our efforts to spur of the marketing of road safety knowledge and information. Recent research on improving road safety education is presented. More research on truck and safety and the assessment of risks due to hazardous goods transport is advocated. The paper ends with a plea to join efforts to develop research and transfer of know-how to developing nations.<p />",
