abstract="The concepts of safety and mobility within the context of transportation, in general, and motor vehicle transportation, in particular, are examined. The historical record is examined to observe that the societal response to the drama produced by transportation systems is variable within a given country as well as being variable from country to country, as as can be concluded by looking at what has happened in the US and Japan. It appears that the political process has greater impact on transport safety and the efforts of technologists.<p />",
