abstract="This paper places mobility and transport in the center of socioeconomic development processes. The current economic stagnation evokes the question whether the prevailing methodology in transportation analysis is appropriate. A plea is made for a more societal-oriented approach to a mobility and transportation planning this observation is particularly important because of the mass expansions of transportation infrastructure in many countries. These mega-scale developments have to be confronted with modern logistics and telecommunications developments, which may be both commentary and substitutable to traditional physical infrastructure. In any case, infrastructure is a necessary condition for regional and urban economic development, so that a meaningful compromise between different policy objectives (environment, safety, growth, etc.) can be found. The paper finally sketches a framework for a more coherent analysis.<p />",
