abstract="Terrorism is a form of violence with political objectives. The focus of the issue has so far concentrated on the political responses and reactions of individual states or the international community. Yet the third actor - the general public's reactions and perception on the issue - is also of significant importance in the formulation of effective counter-terrorism efforts. Public responses to terrorism can significantly influence policy options of the government. The major purpose of this article is to analyse Indonesia's counter-terrorism efforts within the context of the developments of public opinion in the country. It argues that as public opinion is increasingly aware of the threat of terrorism, the government efforts to combat terrorism become more effective. The analysis in this article is based on the results of a national survey. It is interesting to note that although in general Muslims in Indonesia rejected terrorism as a method of struggle, they have great sympathy for the struggle of their fellow Muslims in other parts of the world. In fact, they are willing to give financial contribution. Nevertheless, when they are faced with terrorism, they generally refuse it.<p />",
