abstract="This study applies image sequence analysis techniques to perform pedestrian counting and pedestrian volume measurement. A new algorithm, which consists of four steps, is proposed. The algorithm is capable of extracting pedestrian information from consecutive TV images while eliminating vehicle information. The number of pedestrians crossing a detection line can be automatically counted by the algorithm. Also, pedestrian volumes in a given period of time can be calculated. A real-time system, called the Pedestrian Volume Measurement (PVM), is developed based on the algorithm. The significant advantage of the PVM system to previous systems is that the new system can be used at intersections where vehicle presence makes the previous systems not practicable.<p />",
