abstract="Increasingly, children are being exposed to violent events in their neighborhoods or communities. Observing violent events or living in fear of neighborhood violence can have negative effects for children's mental health and psychological development. This paper discusses the effects of exposure to community violence on children and reviews research on the role of families in mediating the effects of chronic exposure to violence on children. Conditions that strengthen the family's ability to support children's development under these circumstances are discussed.<p />",
