abstract="Road and roadside data has been collected for a number of years in order to inform asset managers. More recently, this information has been put to use to help identify and address locations with high crash risk. This paper provides information on why this 'risk assessment' approach has gained in popularity in the last few years. Australian examples are provided of how data is currently being collected in order to assist in managing safety on roads, including recent trials to collect roadside hazard data. Finally, the paper discusses additional uses for this data, including the combination of road and roadside data with crash location data to better inform road safety improvement programs.<p />",
