abstract="Objectives : To investigate causes of maternal injury and review the literature on pregnancy-related death(PRD, [WHO]) and pregnancy-associated death (PAD, [CDC]) worldwide. Methods : We investigated medical records of 80 cases (1985-1999) of maternal injury and reviewed the literature worldwide. Results : 53/80(60%) cases involved motor vehicle injury with falls, attempted suicide, domestic violence, adverse drug effects, and self injury as other causes. Obstetric complications occurred in 21(26%) cases, and included abruptio placenta, abortion, preterm delivery, and fetal death. Many non-maternal deaths were included in both PRD and PAD surveys. Conclusion : The majority of maternal injuries were motor vehicle injuries. Seat belt laws for pregnant women are necessary.<p />",
