abstract="This paper focuses on the ill-defined but commonly used concept of peripherality. Using a blend of previous research, and the representations made by local agencies during the 1992-1993 Assisted Areas map review, it explores the sensitivity to peripherality on the part of the local area and examines ways in which perceived peripherality -- as evident in a variety of alternative constructions -- is represented to outsiders. The paper finds a wide range of notions of peripherality and an extensive degree of sensitivity to the problem in development terms. Some wider implications of this finding are discussed.<p />",
