Haworth, Director of the National Science Foundation (NSF), testifies on the role of the federal government in science and technology, outlines the history and growth of the NSF, describes present and future programs of the Social Sciences Division, and sets forth the agency's position on the creation of a National Foundation for the Social Sciences. Issues related to NSF authority in such areas as applied research and international cooperation also are raised. The NSF is opposed to the creation of a National Foundation for the Social Sciences because such an agency is unnecessary and could result in fragmentation of government support of research efforts.
