abstract="Defect data for RAF and RN aircraft are collected from all lines of maintenance and some 9 years' of data are available for analysis at the Maintenance Data Centre (MDC). The data are used in a number of ways to improve reliability during the procurement cycle. Reliability is monitored in-service to meet contractual demonstration requirements and to provide supporting evidence for modifications to, and changes in, maintenance policy. Care needs to be taken to interpret reliability assessments based on MDC data as these can differ from the results of development testing. The system has some limitations relating to the completeness and quality of the information but a number of planned improvements should result in more timely and accurate data becoming available.<p />",
