abstract="By comparison of different distribution functions fitted to the same set of measured crack sizes the effect of curve fitting in probabilistic fracture mechanics is studied. The failure probability and the distributions of crack size and of fracture toughness for the failed components are shown to be strongly dependent on the assumed type of distribution and on the quality of the fit.<p />",
