abstract="The study was motivated by a need to establish criteria regarding the level of deployment of maintenance efforts and to determine an effective economic lifetime for ambulance vehicles. The study was commissioned in April 1980 and operational data corresponding to about 400 ambulances used in West Yorkshire have been collected to date. A computerised data bank has been established to sort the data according to breakdown incidents, routine maintenance and manhours spent. The present paper reports the results of analysis corresponding to 16 randomly chosen vehicles used in the Wakefield area.<p />",
