abstract="Exact analytical expressions have been derived for time-dependent and asymptotic average unavailabilities of simple series and parallel standby systems that are periodically inspected or tested. Special emphasis is on the effects of incomplete testing and common-cause failures, extending and challenging some earlier results. Examples illustrate a generic approach for analysing systems with a variety of failure modes, in a recursive fashion. Reference is made to earlier works published in specialist meetings, making a more complete collection of results known to a wider audience.<p />",
