abstract="In relation to probabilistic fracture mechanics, the distribution of the flaw size, a, is studied theoretically. Under widely accepted assumptions, it is shown that the distribution functions G(a) which yield the second asymptotic distribution of the largest value can be promising models for flaw size distributions. Such distribution function have the form G(a) = 1 − (a/ω)−λ in the range of large a, where λ and ω are positive parameters. A typical example of such distributions is given by G(a) = exp [-(a/ω)−gl], which itself has a form of the second asymptotic distribution of the largest value.<p />",
