abstract="A common feature of many of the techniques introduced in recent years for the identification and assessment of hazards in process plants is that they deal with the propagation of faults through the plant. Fault propagation has application not only to design methods such as hazard and operability studies and fault trees but also to computer alarm and trip systems. An interactive, computer-based facility has been developed for the investigation of fault propagation in process plants, including fault tree synthesis and alarm system design. This paper describes the modelling of fault propagation, while fault tree synthesis, the interactive computer facility and an illustrative example are described in further, complementary papers.<p />",
