abstract="A quantitative approach, which couples event tree methodology with the Vesely-Fussell importance measure, is proposed to identify the contribution of physical processes (especially, core debris bed coolability) that are required to occur to mitigate or preclude the unwanted events (e.g. containment basemat-meltthrough failure or the containment overpressurization failure due to noncondensables).Sample calculations with qualitative assignment to the physical branch probabilities are performed, on the basis of the modified post-core-melt event tree structure including the debris bed coolability modeling. The results of these analyses can be used to determine further modifications in plant system design (e.g. in-vessel core debris tray for LMFBR) to induce the contributing physical processes. The purpose is to illustrate the approach procedures rather than to argue for the indicated figures.<p />",
