abstract="An application of the two-stage Bayesian method has been made to estimate the outage rate of oil-fired boiler electric power plants. The two-stage approach developed and applied here represents an improved numerical analysis procedure based on the LOTUS 123 software package available for the IBM-PC. Further, it is shown that plant-specific estimates of boiler outage rates can be calculated based on generic outage data for all US oil-fired boilers, in addition to a subpopulaton of 'sister' plants. It is recommended that the two-stage approach be applied to analyze other such plant-specific outage data, especially in view of the interest among electric utilities in the life extension of such units.<p />",
