abstract="The aim of this study was to determine the characteristics of gait of a sample of normal male adults by means of a method for analysis of gait previously described by the authors ( J. genet. Psychol., 1937, 50, 109-136). Results are presented in the form of tables of norms to facilitate their use in investigations of the deviations that may occur in individual subjects and in groups of subjects of different types from those examined in the present study. The properties of gait investigated fall under three main headings: (1) properties relating to temporal-spatial patterns of foot-contacts; (2) properties relating to changes in position of particular body parts, measured in degrees; and (3) over-all properties of gait relating to the walking activity as a whole. Certain features of gait exhibited by the graphical records are discussed in terms of their neurological basis and the role they play in the organized activity of walking.
