abstract="This year's SFPE symposium &quot;Techniques for Quantitative Fire Hazard Analysis&quot; focuses on available analytical techniques for fire hazard prediction. Topics include damage-ability factors, calculations for discrete fire hazards, prediction of fire effects in enclosures, applications of computer models and the basics of probabilistic and statistical methods for addressing uncertainty. The emphasis will be on applications.This introductory paper provides an overview addressing such issues as the need for quantitative methods, the technical basis for development of these methods, and a review of the more popular methods available to the fire protection community. Major emphasis is placed on the importance of developing an understanding of the technical basis and limitations of such methods. An example problem illustrates this importance.<p />",
