abstract="An investigation has been undertaken to establish the optimum sampling arrangements for high sensitivity smoke detectors in a computer-type environment. A simulated computer facility was constructed and 48 smouldering fire tests were conducted at up to 81 room air changes per hour. Both sampling pipework systems, connected to very high sensitivity smoke detectors, and conventional point-type smoke detectors were installed with the former providing earlier warning, particularly at high airflow rates. Details of optimum design of detection systems for computer facilities are provided.<p />",
