abstract="This paper concerns the specification of the longitudinal ventilation necessary to prevent upstream movement of combustion products in a tunnel fire. Experiments carried out in a model tunnel have revealed significant limitations on the utility of existing empirical expressions for the critical velocity. Simple formulae with a wider range of applicability are presented. The method of scaling model results has been tested by comparison with large-scale test data. The effects of changes in the shape, size and location of the fire on the critical velocity have been investigated.<p />",
