abstract="The lecture traces the origin of the concept of fire modelling from its early association exclusively with reduced geometric scale to the mathematical modelling familiar to modern fire researchers. It emphasises, however, the current limitations to the use of computational fluid dynamics in fire studies and the need to develop the understanding of flame spread and the means by which to describe it in a way usable by engineers. Some examples are given of recent developments towards these ends.<p />",
