abstract="The detection of a fire with a flame detector relies upon the analysis of the flame flickering at several wavelengths. In order to improve the quality of the detection, a number of open questions have been addressed: What is the physical effect responsible for the flame pulsation of a diffusion flame? How does the main frequency depend on the location of the fire? How does a flame from a pool fire respond to air currents? We present results that furnish a new insight into these questions. We have found that the flickering spectrum of the flame possesses some features that permit a flame to be distinguished from a potential source of false alarms. The new Waverex flame detector integrates these new results into the algorithms using a combination of wavelet and fuzzy techniques that has been developed in our laboratories.<p />",
