abstract="Examples of the dangers of traumatic stress are frequently reported in detail in the news. But less publicized are the causes, symptoms, and treatments for such disorders. The author, who has experienced PTSD and is a true example of the wounded healer, provides insights that are relevant to understanding the symptoms of PTSD and the ways they can manifest themselves on the battlefield, as well as in civilian life, on the roadway, in home settings, and in self-care (or the lack of it). This article is the first of a multipart series discussing PTSD in returning veterans, their treatment, and possible environmental and genetic factors that may contribute to its development.
