abstract="Security in psychiatric settings has traditionally been a concern for medical staff, society at large, and indeed, the patients themselves. Security must cover three general areas: (1) Persons under psychiatric care who show signs of a desire to commit suicide or acts of self mutilation must be protected form themselves, (2) patients must be prevented from committing acts of violence against other patients or staff, and (3) the most violent patients, particularly the criminally insane, must be isolated from society. This article reviews how these requirements can be met using todays technology.<p />",
