abstract="In response to the killing of 20 children and 6 adults at Sandy Hook Elementary school on December 17, 2012, this document updates a previous School Shootings Position Statement that was disseminated nationally following the tragic school-related shootings of 2006. The current position statement argues that research supports a thoughtful approach to safer schools, guided by four key elements: Balance, Communication, Connectedness, and Support, along with strengthened attention to mental health needs in the community, structured threat assessment approaches, revised policies on youth exposure to violent media, and increased policies and practices related to common sense gun safety. A list of endorsing organizations and individuals is provided.<p />",
