abstract="VioLit summary:OBJECTIVE:The objective of this article by Prothrow-Stith et al. was to set forth the public health approach of the Violence Prevention Project, a program of the Health Promotion Program for Urban Youth in the Boston Department of Health and Hospitals.METHODOLOGY:A non-experimental design was used to describe the components of the Violence Prevention Project.FINDINGS/DISCUSSION:The Violence Prevention Project is a community-based primary prevention program that initiates outreach and education in an effort to change attitudes and behavior to prevent juvenile violence. School-based curriculum, community agency involvement in teaching the curriculum, community networking and support, and media campaigns are the fundamental components of the Violence Prevention Project.AUTHORS' RECOMMENDATIONS:The authors stated that violence intervention and prevention must be sensitive to community contexts and individual behavior within particular social contexts, and therefore, community involvement in planning, implementation, and evaluation is critical.
