abstract="In the United Kingdom, the Road Traffic Act of 1988 creates offences for driving whilst unfit due to the effects of alcohol and drugs. However, there are two special legal defences under the law which are available to an accused driver, dealing with persons who do not intend to drive whilst under the influence and with post-incident consumption of alcohol. These defences are used regularly in the UK courts. At present, they apply only to alcohol. The possibility of extending the defences to drugs is considered based on existing experience with cases involving alcohol.<p />",
