abstract="The article contains an overview of the results of the EU research project ALCOLOCKS (Alcohol interlock implementation in the European Union - Feasibility study and field trial(s)). The aim of the project was to establish the technical, legal, administrative and social feasibility of the implementation of breath alcohol sensitive ignition interlocks for DUI offenders within the European Union. Written surveys were addressed/sent to 11 European countries, which do not yet have any experience with interlock programmes and to a further 4 countries that have already implemented such measures. Based on these surveys, existing literature as well as an international workshop with experts on traffic safety from Europe, Canada and the USA, recommendations were drawn for the design of a field test to assess the effectiveness of interlock programmes as a special preventive measure for DUI offenders in Europe. The article contains an introduction into the project's aims and difficulties, an overview of central results concerning the effectiveness and acceptance of breath alcohol sensitive ignition interlock programmes as well as a summary of the technical, legal, administrative and organisational demands on such measures.<p />",
