abstract="With a series of investigations, BASt intends to lay the foundation for combatting the urgent problem of drinking and driving. A number of related research projects are expected to lead to new knowledge of currently prevailing modes of behaviour, their change with time, and possibilities of influencing them. The research concept was defined making use of the expectancy - value - theories with regard to special situations. The main idea is that the actions of road users facing the conflict between drinking and driving are preceded by a decision process hardly studied so far, but which might likely provide a basis for possible counter measures. Therefore, not the personal characteristics of an impaired driver are of primary concern but the attitude of the 'normal' driver who attempts to solve the conflict between 'drinking and/or driving'. In this context the process of group dynamics and the background of personal experience must be considered. The main research project is to be based on a representative sample-survey carried out thrice in order to ensure a comprehensive and useful data basis for the Federal Republic of Germany which is to cover nearly all important problem spheres and influencing factors involved in the complex of problems related to drinking and driving. Specific problems, such as the study of the dynamic processes involved in the drinking situation or the development within the social environment, will be investigated in the course of additional indepth projects.<p />",
