abstract="Analysing the German road accident statistics indicates that the introduction of the 0.5 per mille regulation resulted in a further decrease of road accidents even after taking into consideration the existing reduction found in recent times. A roadside survey carried out at the end of 1997 in the German regions of Thuringen and Unterfranken shows that the new limit further encourages the tendency of fewer drinking driving incidents which could be observed since 1994. An interview of the drivers shows that the increased police presence on the roads is a more important factor than the disapproval of driving under the influence of alcohol. Particularly strong effects are found in young drivers.

DWI; DUI

",
