abstract="Japan today spends a little less than 20% of all its petroleum energy in the transportation sector, and the total amount of this consumption is increasing. It is essential for the society to put an end to this increase from the standpoint of the current world energy situation. This report lists several potential conservation policies in the field of transportation, and shows the expected effects and inadequacies of some of the more representative ones. Technical improvements, law enforcement, and financial controls, are amongst the policies discussed. This study showed that bus priority lanes were not as effective as expected as a fuel saving measure, and that wide-area signal control on a nationwide scale would be very effective.<p /> <p>Language: en</p>",
