abstract="We report on the early development and family background of 20 patients admitted to an anxiety disorders clinic serving a disadvantaged population. Sixteen of these 20 patients had been abused or neglected. Nineteen had a diagnosis of at least one personality disorder. We discuss the relationship between the patients' backgrounds and their current disorders.
