abstract="In a systematic prospective study of 71 patients with acute spinal cord injury carried out in the acute and rehabilitation phases of treatment, 14 patients meeting the DSM-III criteria for major depressive disorder were identified. A further 13 patients had transient periods of depressed mood, while the majority of patients showed no clear evidence of depression.
